Dental Implants

Dental implants are a modern, revolutionary method to restore the function and aesthetics of the mouth, when one, several, or all teeth are missing.

Dental implants are artificial roots and have similar shape and size of that of the natural teeth.

They are placed into the jaw bone in the position of the missing teeth. They are made of titanium, one of the most biocompatible biomaterials, that is widely used in other medical specialties, such as artificial joints, pace makers etc.

Dental implants help us create fixed, natural looking teeth and thus avoid a removable denture.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are artificial brackets with shape and dimensions similar to the root of the natural teeth and are placed in the jaw where the natural teeth have been lost.

Dental implants are made of titanium, one of the best bio-materials, and are now widely used in medicine, for the manufacture of artificial joints, pacemakers, etc.

There are more types of implants and most modern systems have adopted the screw shape.

In recent years, advances in technology have focused on the surface treatment, shape and biological behaviour of implants.

This does not mean that all implants are all the same, as there are types of implants that can be placed in all cases, while there are others that are more specialised and intended for specific cases or for specialised techniques.

Dental implants - Scheduling

A proper treatment with dental implants starts with the right planning! Today we have at our disposal sophisticated imaging systems of the jaw in 3 dimensions, so that we can plan each step with absolute precision.

This way we know in advance exactly how many and what kind of implants we will use, as well as how the prosthetic construction of the final teeth will be done.

Dental implants – Placement and reconstruction

Implant therapy consists of two phases:

1st Phase: Placement of the implants in the pre-selected site.
We then have to wait for a period of 3-4 months, until the osseo-integration is complete (2).

2nd Phase: Exposing the implants, placement of the prosthetic components and temporary restoration and subsequently fabrication of the final teeth (3).

This is the phase when we will uncover the implants under the gums, and place the prosthetic parts necessary for the construction of the teeth. We will then take the final impressions (measurements) so that the teeth can be made in the dental laboratory(3).

Modern dental implants, as well as refined techniques render implant therapy a safe and highly successful treatment option.

How were Modern Dental Implants Discovered?

In the beginning of the 50’s, Swedish Professor Branemark made an astonishing discovery!

He observed that titanium could functionally join with living bone cells! After systematic and meticulous research he was able to prove that under controlled conditions titanium could predictably integrate with bone, a process he named osseointegration. The first osseointegrated implants were placed in humans in 1965 with excellent results.

Ever since gigantic leaps of progress have been made. Today more and more people trust dental implants to enjoy a better quality of life.

What Does a Treatment with Dental Implants Offer?

Dental implants offer most of all self-confidence, since one can freely enjoy a favored meal and laugh and speak without hesitation.

Using dental implants, we don’t only restore the normal function and chewing ability – we bring harmony back to the smile and the entire face. Especially when multiple teeth are missing, the lips and cheeks loose their natural support, making the signs of time even stronger.

Dental implants help us recreate a beautiful smile and a youthful, radiant face.
