TMD – Treatment

Temporo-Mandibular Dysfunction Syndrome may be causing severe pain and discomfort, the good news is that it can be treated.

You do not have to let yourself suffer in vain! Temporo-Mandibular Dysfunction Syndrome can be treated in several ways. If you have the symptoms follow the appropriate treatment and get a better quality of life!

In TMJ treatment, dentists use a variety of therapeutical modalities. Independent from the particular technique, TMJ therapy can be divided into two Stages: In the first phase we will fight the symptoms and the consequences of muscle spasm, while in the second phase we will correct possible defects in the form and function of the teeth.

TMD-Treatment-First Phase

The purpose of Stage Ι Therapy is to eliminate muscle spasms, joint swelling and dislocation (if possible), and generally reduce any type of pain. In order to achieve this we generally use an intra oral splint: a specially designed removable splint, that fits precisely on the teeth and is almost invisible, since it fabricated from a clear material. The intra-oral Splint protects the teeth from excessive forces and occlusal interferences and has a relaxing effect on the muscles, relieving them from tension and spasm.

The intra oral Splint is usually worn at night (when we have no control over the movements of the jaw) and that’s why it is called a “night guard”.

TMD-Treatment-Second Phase

The purpose of Stage II Therapy is to definitively correct the occlusion and eliminate any discrepancies, between the upper and lower jaws. This may include adjustment of the dental occlusion (adjusting the “bite”), prosthetic reconstruction of the lost or damaged teeth, orthodontics, or a combination of some of the above treatments.

Upon completion of the second phase, it is important to wear the occlusal splint, especially during periods of exacerbation of the parafunctions, in order to maintain the harmonic function of the Temporo-Mandibular Joint.
